By midnight the works were in full operation. We were clear from the carcase; sail had been made; the wind was freshening; the wild ocean darkness was intense. But that darkness was licked up by the fierce flames, which at intervals forked forth from the sooty flues, and illuminated every lofty rope in the rigging, as with the famed Greek fire. The burning ship drove on, as if remorselessly commissioned to some vengeful deed. So the pitch and sulphur-freighted brigs of the bold Hydriote, Canaris, issuing from their midnight harbors, with broad sheets of flame for sails, bore down upon the Turkish frigates, and folded them in conflagrations.

Snap! the overstrained line sagged down in one long festoon; the tugging log was gone. "I crush the quadrant, the thunder turns the needles, and now the mad sea parts the log-line. But Ahab can mend all.

The average life expectancy of a Martian after the age of maturity is about three hundred years, but would be nearer the one-thousand mark were it not for the various means leading to violent death.  Owing to the waning resources of the planet it evidently became necessary to counteract the increasing longevity which their remarkable skill in therapeutics and surgery produced, and so human life has come to be considered but lightly on Mars, as is evidenced by their dangerous sports and the almost continual warfare between the various communities.

The Hatter on Trial

'Take off your hat,' the King said to the Hatter. 'It isn't mine,' said the Hatter. 'Stolen!' the King exclaimed, turning to the jury, who instantly made a  memorandum of the fact. 'I keep them to sell,' the Hatter added as an explanation; 'I've none of  my own. I'm a hatter.' Here the Queen put on her spectacles, and began staring at the Hatter,  who turned pale and fidgeted. 'Give your evidence,' said the King; 'and don't be nervous, or I'll have  you executed on the spot.'

Mr. Fogg's wardrobe was amply supplied and in the best taste. Each pair of trousers, coat, and vest bore a number, indicating the time of year and season at which they were in turn to be laid out for wearing...

Testing word wrapping around images and embeds.

"In eighty days," interrupted Phileas Fogg. "That is true, gentlemen," added John Sullivan.  "Only eighty days, now that the section between Rothal and Allahabad, on the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, has been opened.  Here is the estimate made by the Daily Telegraph: "Yes, in eighty days!" exclaimed Stuart, who in his excitement made a false deal.  "But that doesn't take into account bad weather, contrary winds, shipwrecks, railway accidents, and so on."

At last, stepping on board the Pequod, we found everything in profound quiet, not a soul moving. The cabin entrance was locked within; the hatches were all on, and lumbered with coils of rigging.

Immediately after we resumed the march, and though I realized that in some way I had offended Dian the Beautiful I could not prevail upon her to talk with me that I might learn wherein I had erred—in fact I might quite as well have been addressing a sphinx for all the attention I got.

One has to imagine, as well as one may, the fate of those batteries towards Esher, waiting so tensely in the twilight.  Survivors there were none.  One may picture the orderly expectation, the officers alert and watchful, the gunners ready, the ammunition piled to hand, the limber gunners with their horses and waggons, the groups of civilian spectators standing as near as they were permitted, the evening stillness, the ambulances and hospital tents with the burned and wounded from Weybridge; then the dull resonance of the shots the Martians fired, and the clumsy projectile whirling over the trees and houses and smashing amid the neighbouring fields.
