Principle 10: Take Care of Your Appearance

Steve Douglass

One of the characteristics God has given you physically is your appearance.

The exterior of your “temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19) is important, too. Study some time the quality and beauty of material and the skillfulness of workmanship that went into building God’s temple in Solomon’s time (1 Kings 5-7).

I know of many people who have become lax in taking care of their appearance and as a result suffer a tremendous lack of confidence and a corresponding depreciation in their abilities to function well with other people.

If people are tremendously overweight, for example, they often don’t enjoy mixing with people socially because they are embarrassed. This condition is frequently worsened by the principle mentioned in Proverbs 23:7: “For as he thinks within himself, so he is.” A little lack of confidence breeds even more of a lack.

A person will find it more difficult to step out and aggressively minister for God if they are not sure that they are an appropriate representative of God. Therefore, seek to honor and glorify God in your appearance just as you would seek to in other areas.
